Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge says he wants to play for silverware during the pre-season.

The AFL last held a pre-season tournament with a trophy for the winning side in 2013, with the last three years made up of merely practice matches in the lead in to the season.

But Beveridge says he would prefer to see the re-introduction of a pre-season trophy.

"I'm a bit of a purist. I'd like to be playing for a trophy, it just adds a bit more meaning. If there was one part of it I'd change it'd be to have something up for grabs," Beveridge said.

"That was a really big thing for the club back then. Especially for up and coming young groups. It's a milestone that adds a bit of momentum, and a trophy to the cabinet. So I think the effect of that can't ever be discounted. That said, it's been diluted a little bit over the years but I wouldn't mind it coming back."

Meanwhile, Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley believes that the pre-season schedule is too long and should be reduced to two games.

โ€œPersonally I believe three is too many, you donโ€™t need three to get ready,โ€ Hinkley told SEN Radio on Friday.

โ€œMost clubs throughout the competition have used one of those games to field a really inexperienced side and the other times weโ€™ve predominately put in our most senior players, who are recovering from some injury, with game time needed for them.

โ€œWeโ€™ve managed I think based around two games and I think itโ€™s probably about the right build up for us."
