Chris Scott and Geelong have been left looking for answers after they were obliterated and eliminated from the 2021 finals series by Melbourne.

The Cats were no match for the Demons as they fell by 83-points in a game that somewhat seemed like a changing of the guard.

Geelong now need to evaluate where to next. Their list has been built for the now for the last decade and while it has seen plenty of home and away success, they haven't won a premiership since 2011.

Scott admitted last night that some "tweaks" may be needed as the Cats look to prepare a list that is able to go again in 2022.

“We’ve had a plan over a period of time that wasn’t dependant on a good win or a bad loss at the end of a season,” he said in his post-game press conference.

“We’re always considering ways we can tweak our plan a little bit, we’ll go away with the right people and put some work into that.

“It’s (the club's plan is) not really for me to defend at the moment, but what I will say is in 2010 Geelong had a bad loss in a prelim final and it feel like it was the end then, so that’s our challenge.”

The Cats recruited Jeremy Cameron, Isaac Smith and Shaun Higgins at the end of last season as they looked to bounce back from their loss in the 2020 Grand Final.

Prioritising the recruiting of ready-made players has seen the Cats lose talented youngsters over the years and their list is an ageing one.

Mark Blicavs (30), Luke Dahlhaus (29), Patrick Dangerfield (31), Mitch Duncan (30), Cam Guthrie (29), Tom Hawkins (33), Shaun Higgins (33), Sam Menegola (29), Joel Selwood (33), Isaac Smith (32) and Zach Tuohy (31) are all contracted for next season.

It seems more likely than not that the Cats would look to take this group and challenge again. But questions remain as to whether the club would be better off biting the bullet and turning an eye toward the future.
