A Carlton fan, who was accused of launching a partially filled water bottle at an AFL goal umpire, has reportedly no case to answer, with the prosecutors dropping the charges.

A man, identified as 23-year-old Alexander Grutteria, was charged with recklessly causing injury, discharging a missile and unlawful assault.

On Wednesday, Grutteria faced the Melbourne Magistrates' Court where he found all charges - in relation to a match at Marvel Stadium between the Blues and St Kilda in Round 24 - were dropped.

According to News Corp, Grutteria's lawyer, Sylvia Barbadonis, said at a previous appearance that "the identification (of an offendant) was an issue" in this case, with CCTV, broadcast footage and goal-square cameras unable to reveal anyone launching the bottle.

The goal umpire, Stephen Piperno, was struck in the head halfway through the second quarter, suffering from a 2cm laceration and bleeding.

Piperno was taken from the field and replaced by emergency goal umpire Chelsea Roffey.

In response to the act, the AFL handed down a lifetime ban to the alleged bottle thrower.

The AFL at the time confirmed the man previously held a three-game Carlton membership but was no longer eligible to purchase an AFL membership of any kind.

Carlton's Cheersquad released a statement shortly after the event confirming the patron in question is not a member of their group.

"We saw it happen," the statement read. "The person isn't a Cheersquad member.

"We instantly pointed them out to security and the person removed themselves from the ground right then and there.

"We hope the goal umpire is alright. Terrible. Should never happen."
