Former Western Bulldogs ruckman Luke Darcy believes Gold Coast midfielder Gary Ablett will retire if he doesn't get a his wish to return to Geelong at the end of the season.

Ablett asked to be traded back to the Cats during last season's trade period but had his request denied by the Suns, and is expected to ask once again at the end of the season if a move can be facilitated.

Speaking on Triple M's Hot Breakfast on Thursday morning, Darcy and Collingwood president Eddie McGuire debated the potential trade, with McGuire suggesting Geelong are looking for a "bargin basement" deal for Ablett, and wouldn't be willing to part with too much.

Darcy believes Ablett will be hoping a deal between the two clubs can be achieved, otherwise says 2017 could be the last we see of the two-time Brownlow Medallist.

“The Cats are up to their eyeballs in trying to do this (deal),” Darcy told Triple M's Hot Breakfast.

“They’re playing the game, but behind the scenes everything that can be done to make this happen is currently being done.

“And I think Gary Ablett will walk away and not play again if they (Cats and Suns) don’t make it happen.”

Geelong are yet to offer contracts to forward Dan Menzel and midfielder Steven Motlop, who will likely need to wait until Ablett's future is resolved before working on their own.
