The Blues will "absolutely" pursue Jeremy McGovern and Andrew Gaff this off-season amongst a host of "A Grade" free agents in an attempt to rejuvenate their list.

Carlton's lack of star power has been evident this year, following Bryce Gibbs' defection to Adelaide, Sam Docherty's absence with an ACL injury and Marc Murphy's inability to stay on the park with a nagging foot complaint.

Considering the missing personnel, it was always going to be tough goings for a club that got younger through the off-season, the old 'take a step backwards to go forwards' notion.

But the result has been plain ugly. Just one win after 13 rounds to sit dead last on the ladder, with their skipper weighing up his playing future beyond 2018.

And their 57-point loss to Fremantle on the weekend, including a goalless first half, was arguably their worst showing of the season, following on from their bye.

Blues football boss Andy McKay maintained that the club was on the right track and in a good position to attack the free agency market.

“We will be looking hard in the free agency window at the end of the year. We want to do that with really good A Grade talent and we are in a position where we can do that," McKay told 3AW.

Asked if Carlton would go after such names as McGovern and Gaff, McKay said "Absolutely, absolutely".

McKay disregarded ex-Blue Rhys Palmer's dig at the club's culture on social media despite their horror showing against the Dockers.

“Look, I don’t want to buy into tweets on social media and things from ex-players. But I don’t think you can question our culture, that’s for sure,’’ he said.

“It’s very strong. We are bound by blue and there is no doubt about that internally, we don’t worry about that kind of thing.”

The Blues face Collingwood this Sunday at the MCG.
