As knee injuries have taken their toll on the AFLW competition in 2018, Katie Brennan can breathe a sigh of relief, with hopes the Western Bulldogs captain can return to the field before the end of the season.

Brennan suffered her injury in the closure of Saturday's clash against the reigning Premiers, Adelaide.

Scans have later revealed that she sustained minor ligament damage in her right ankle, giving her, and the Dogs, hope she can return to the field in 2018.

"We know Katie will do everything possible to ensure she can get back out there before the end of the season." AFLW Coach Paul Groves, told westernbulldogs.com.au.

With only four weeks left until the finals, Brennan is racing against the clock to prove her fitness.

"While it's unclear how many weeks she might miss, she has already started working with our medical staff to make sure she recovers at the earliest opportunity," Groves said.

"As one of our leaders, Katie will be difficult to replace, but the group of players who have missed selection have worked extremely hard to be ready for their opportunity."

The Western Bulldogs will host Carlton at VU Whitten Oval on Friday Night, as both sides look to consolidate their top four aspirations.
