The Geelong Cats have announced that emerging defender Lawson Humphries has recommitted to the club until 2028, tacking on two more years to his contract that was set to expire next year.
The Pilbara native was plucked from the WAFL with the 63rd pick in the 2023 National Draft and rapidly emerged as a key cog in Geelong's defence following his debut in Round 16, 2024.
Humphries did not fall victim to the "sophomore slump" and instead had a dominant second year in the AFL, averaging 16.2 disposals per game and ranking behind only Tom Stewart in rebound 50s per game.
Humphries' paramount nature to the Cats' elite defence was best illustrated in the Grand Final. Despite the loss, Humphries was quite easily one of Geelong's best afield that day, with the 22-year-old setting up seven rebound 50s - a team-high - from his 23 disposals, 18 of which were effective.
Geelong Cats Executive General Manager of Football Andrew Mackie said Humphries' character was a major factor in the Cats' decision to extend his contract this soon.
“Since arriving at Geelong, we've all seen Lawson's on-field ability which is matched by his brilliant character off the field," Mackie said.
“Lawson has become an integral part of our football club in such a short period of time, and we are pleased to retain him until at least the end of 2028."
Lawson Humphries and the Cats open their 2026 season against Gold Coast in Opening Round, flying up to face the Carrara-based Suns on Friday, March 6 at People First Stadium.
