The Gold Coast Suns are set to announce former Port Adelaide and Hawthorn player, Stuart Dew, as the club's new coach for 2018.

The Suns are expected to announce the appointment on Thursday after the final decision was made on Wednesday evening.

Dew beat out early favourite John Barker and Scott Burns for the position.

As a player, Dew played 180 games for Port Adelaide between 1997 and 2006, including the 2004 premiership, before retiring from the game.

He then came out of retirement in 2008, helping Hawthorn to a shock grand final win over Geelong, before retiring for the second time at the end of the 2009 season after 26 games with the Hawks.

The 38-year-old then moved to the Swans, where he has worked as an assistant coach at since 2009.
