Richmond ruckman Shaun Hampson has announced his retirement from the AFL effective immediately, after failing to overcome a chronic back injury.
Hampson's last game for the Tigers came in round 23, 2016, after playing 35 games for the club following 63 for Carlton.
The ruckman was doing everything he could to overcome his back pain, but has opted to instead take a longer approach in getting his body right for post-sport life.
Richmond's General Manager of Football Neil Balme praised Hampson for his work around the club, and spoke about his battle with injury.
“Shaun worked bravely and tirelessly to give himself the best chance to overcome this painful injury,” Balme told richmondfc.com.au.
“There is ultimately a point where Shaun must think of his long-term health, rather than just the immediate challenge of playing football. It was clear to Shaun and our medical staff that he had reached that point.
“Shaun certainly loves his family and it was a very difficult decision for him to make.
“He is a very popular member of our squad and we thank him for his dedication to our football club.
“We wish Shaun, Megan and their children River and Rosie all the best for the future.”
