The AFL has announced the AFL Women's competition will feature two new teams in 2019 and another four new teams for the 2020 season.

This means the AFLW will expand from eight to 10 teams in 2019 and then to 14 teams the following year.

League CEO Gillon McLachlan announced on Wednesday Geelong and North Melbourne will have teams in the AFLW in 2019.

North Melbourne's team will however, be based in Tasmania, meaning the Apple Isle will finally have its own team.

Meanwhile, in 2020, four new clubs will gain licences, with Gold Coast, West Coast Eagles, Richmond and St Kilda added to the competition.

A total of eight clubs, Essendon, Geelong, Gold Coast, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Richmond, St Kilda and West Coast, applied for AFLW licenses in June this year.
