Maligned former No.1 draft pick Jack Watts says he hopes to remain a Melbourne player in 2018 and beyond, despite speculation surrounding his future.

Demons coach Simon Goodwin confirmed on Monday the club could trade Watts if it is best for the club, despite having two years to run on his current contract.

But Watts told reporters on Tuesday morning he wants to remain a Melbourne player and is yet to get his head around his conversation with Goodwin.

"Yeah a little bit surprised (when Goodwin spoke to him) ... still trying to get my head around it," Watts said.

"I'm sure we can (work something out) with Melbourne, I'm sure we can but I guess there were some pretty clear words.

"Whatever happens I'll put my head down and give it my best shot. I'm super confident of playing great footy wherever that is.

"It's just really frustrating, being at the club for so long and how much I love the boys, seeing where the club's at at the moment and hopefully playing finals next year.

"It'd be a shock to the system if I was going to miss that ... I think I've probably got the best in front of me."

The 26-year-old's manager, Paul Connors said Melbourne has handled the situation well, despite the obvious disappointment of his Watts' name being discussed as trade bait.

"He's contracted, so he can stay if he wants to. That's his prerogative," Connors said.

"Goodwin sat down with Jack and spoke to him. We can't fault Melbourne throughout the whole process.

"Clubs get aggressive but also with Jack, Melbourne is on the right track.

"I know they missed finals, it's a game of inches and they improved.

"They have got some really good talent there and I see a really bright future for Melbourne and that's what Jack had to weigh up.

"He wants to be part of that future and fingers crossed he can be."

Watts played 16 games in 2017, averaging 15.7 disposals and kicking 22 goals. He missed rounds 14 - 17 due to a hamstring injury and was dropped from the senior side after the Demons' loss to GWS in Round 20, missing the next fortnight.

Sydney and Port Adelaide have so far been linked with a move for Watts.
