Geelong are prepared to release emerging midfielder Charlie Constable to a rival club if they can work out an adequate trade deal.
Constable, a talented contested ball winner, has only played nine games since being drafted in 2017, including just two games for the Cats this year.
The Herald Sun reports that with another emerging midfielder in Brandan Parfitt set to sign a new deal, it’s looking increasingly likely that Constable will struggle to get minutes beyond this year.
It’s doesn’t help his cause either that the Cats are hot favourites to land Adelaide free agent Brad Crouch and North Melbourne’s Shaun Higgins at the end of the season.
If the Cats do land both of these targets, Geelong's on-ball brigade would include all three of Parfitt, Crouch and Higgins, along with Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood, Jack Steven, Sam Menegola and Cam Guthrie among others.
Constable remains contracted to the Cats, having signed a two-year extension last year, meaning he doesn’t come out of contract until the end of next year.
This means that Constable will need to be traded out of Kardinia Park if he is to request a departure.
The Saints were linked to onballer last year but given the club has an abundance of midfield talent and where they’re situated right now, it seems unlikely he’ll find himself at Moorabbin in the future.
Essendon and Carlton have been names linked with Constable in recent weeks. The Bombers more so after the Blues are set to secure GWS’ Zac Williams in free agency and Essendon’s Saad expressed his desires to be traded to Carlton this week.
At 191cm, Constable would be an ideal fit in an Essendon midfield that lacks a tall ball-winner.
