Fans around the country seem divided over how the AFL should deal with the issue of punching across the league.

After the Match Review Panel threatened to suspend anyone who threw a jumper punch for the remainder of the season a fortnight ago, Geelong's Tom Hawkins became the first man to fall victim to the crackdown after he struck Adelaide's Matt Crouch last Friday night.

Supporters were almost split down the middle when asked about the penalty for punching, with 52% saying players should be automatically suspended for punching, while 48% said it shouldn't be an automatic punishment.

The same split occured on another MRP related question, with 52% suggesting the MRP do punish players firmly enough for misdemeanours, while 48% said they didn't.

Despite fans being split on how they should punish players, 75% of supporters agreed the Panel have not been consistent in their punishments so far this year.

Supporters also used the survey as an opportunity to give feedback to the umpiring department, and it looks as though fans aren't happy with the changes that were made before the 2017 season.

Only 24% of fans believe the new rule changes/interpretations have made the game better this season, with 45% of supporters suggesting it hasn't, and 31% don't care.

On the umpiring as a whole, supporters were even more scathing towards the whistleblowers, with only 17% of the 39,000 people surveyed believing the umpiring is better this season than it has been.

There is one aspect of umpiring that fans do want to see stick around however, with 72% of fans asking the umpires to continue to bounce the ball at centre stoppages.
