GWS recruit Jake Stringer has been sanctioned for carelessly contacting an umpire during Thursday night's clash against Essendon at Marvel Stadium.

The former Bomber was in red-hot form, kicking three goals to lead his new side to a 48-point victory, but his performance with the ball wasn't the only thing that caught the eye.

During the fourth term, Stringer came into contact with an umpire, and the Match Review Officer (MRO) fined him $1,500 ($1,000 guilty plea). It was his first offence.

Stringer's fine comes in the same week that Carlton's Adam Cerra was sent to the Tribunal for four careless umpire contacts in the past two years.

In response to the increased number of incidents, the AFL cracked down on the conduct, putting multiple offenders on notice, and potentially having them suspended, pending the outcome of the Tribunal.

However, Cerra, who was the first case in the newly written rule, escaped with a $5,500 fine. The league wanted the fee to be $6,250, but it was haggled down by the Blues.

Stringer's teammate Kieren Briggs avoided any punishment for his heavy tackle on Sam Durham, which saw the Essendon midfielder attended to by the club's medical team, who subsequently performed a HIA test.
