Carlton's George Hewett and Brisbane's Lachie Neale have both avoided suspensions after trading blows during Friday's Opening Round clash.

Both players have been charged with striking by the AFL's Match Review Officer for the altercation during the third quarter.

Hewett's high strike on Neale has been graded as careless conduct, high contact and low impact, resulting in a $3,750 fine.

An intentional grading would've seen Hewett handed a one-game suspension.

Neale's body blow on Hewett has been graded as intentional conduct, body contact and low impact to also see the reigning Brownlow winner hit with a $3,750 fine.

Both players can submit early guilty pleas and walk away with reduced sanctions of $2,500.

Hewett's Blues are scheduled to face Richmond at the MCG this coming Thursday, while the Lions' Round 1 clash will come against Fremantle at Optus Stadium next Sunday.
