AFL greats Tim Watson and Garry Lyon have said Hawthorn should be "bitterly disappointed" with forward Luke Breust's finals series.

Breust kicked 54 goals in the home and away season and was named in the All-Australian side for 2018, however was kept goalless in the Hawks' semi-final loss to Melbourne on Friday.

Speaking on SEN, Lyon said Breust was no match for Demons small defender Neville Jetta on Friday night.

"He just wasn’t able to impose himself at all as their sort of talisman, kicked 50-odd goals for the year and Neville Jetta kept him scoreless and then I think he kicked one goal last week,"Lyon said.

"He’d be absolutely disappointed."

"He had a wonderful season, but he would be bitterly disappointed with his two finals games," Watson added.

"He was eclipsed in both of those games."

Lyon, the former Melbourne captain said veteran Shaun Burgoyne was another for the Hawks who played below their own high standard.

"Shaun Burgoyne, for one of the great finals performers we’ve ever seen, he’s an example of how good you are, when you get into your mid-30s, it’s damn hard to do it again," Lyon added.
