All 18 clubs could have the same week off during the season, while the pre-finals bye might be pushed further into September ahead of the grand final.

AFL football boss Greg Swann has barely put his feet under his new desk, but has already flagged multiple areas of improvement in the competition fixture.

In 2025, the bye rounds were spread across five weeks (Round 12-16).

Pushback from football fans has called for the bye rounds to be reduced, with Swann looking into a league-wide break instead.

"We're having a look at the way we do the fixture. There's a couple of other things that might come in as well," Swann said on SEN.

"My personal view is I'd like everybody to have the same bye. A bye for the whole industry after Round 15 or something. Then we come back and go again.

"That might temper what happens later in the season for that pre-finals bye or whether there's a wildcard round. We're looking at all of it. That's a watch this space."

The former Brisbane administrator also flagged the potential issue with his suggestion, saying the broadcasters hold a lot of sway.

"It's only me floating it ... but the season gets a little bit disjointed in the middle when everybody is having byes at different times," he said.

"But if the broadcasters don't want to do it, then we won't do it."

Swann also discussed the viability of the pre-finals bye, which sometimes doesn't advantage the top-four sides, albeit with double chances up their sleeve.

The top eight, since 2016, have all been given a week before the new season in September starts.

The Western Bulldogs made the most of the extra time, welcoming back key players ahead of their historic run to the premiership from seventh. The same can be said for Brisbane last year, which achieved the ultimate glory from fifth.

However, Swann would like to see the break between the preliminary and grand finals.

"There's a little bit of that," Swann said.

"But Sydney and Brisbane played in a Grand Final (in 2024) and we had a chat about it. It's more to do with somebody getting concussed (in the preliminary final) and not being able to play (in the Grand Final).

"That's why we think that bye would be better off before the Grand Final."

The proposed change would also allow players who were concussed in the penultimate weekend the opportunity to make it back in time, pending they are cleared of the protocols, to feature in the decider.

It is also understood that Swann and his team are considering a wildcard round.

If it were introduced this year, it would play out between Gold Coast (7th) and Sydney (10th), as well as Hawthorn (8th) and the Bulldogs (9th). The winners would then join the top six, and the regular top-eight finals would continue.
