A rise in COVID-19 cases in both Brisbane and Sydney has left the AFL in a sweat to prepare Round 1 proceedings this week.

Following positive community transmission cases across the two states, the AFL has looked to act quickly in hope of going ahead with the current schedule for the season's opening round.

The Lions are set to host the Swans at the Gabba on Saturday night, while the Suns are fixtured to travel west to face the Eagles.

Triple M reporter Jay Clark said there is some concern surrounding the potential closure of the Western Australia border should case numbers on the east coast increase.

"History would suggest [Western Australia] are quick to put up that harder border." Clark said.

"If WA puts up a hard border to Queensland, then that Round 1 game between Gold Coast and West Coast is in real trouble.

"Clearly Gold Coast won't be able to come over ... the AFL fixture team will be working out other scenarios."

The AFL remains confident Round 1 will go ahead as planned, with no plans to shut borders as state governments remain on top of the virus as case numbers emerge by day.

The AFLW was forced to move Brisbane's home clash against Collingwood to Whitten Oval on Sunday, with the Lions returning home shortly after the match.

Brisbane won the clash 35-32 to hand the Magpies their first loss of the season and jump into second place behind Fremantle.
