State of Origin is making a comeback to the AFL in 2026.
For the first time since 1999, the league is set to revive the concept in an attempt to add more events to the footy calendar.
The league confirmed on Monday that Western Australia will host Victoria at Optus Stadium on February 14 as part of the pre-season fixture.
It follows the Indigenous All Stars showcase match against Fremantle at the corresponding time of 2025.
The league has named the return of state representatives matches as 'AFL Origin'.
“State football is one of the great traditions of our game, with fans and players alike calling for its return for some time and we are thrilled to see it back,” AFL CEO Andrew Dillon said.
“Origin inspires passion, State pride and draws upon years old rivalries that are central to the history of our game and our very greatest players.
“I would like to thank Premier Roger Cook and the WA Government for their support in delivering this exciting event for our code.
“It will be a special moment to see a Big V and a Sandgroper jumper back on the field before we start our 2026 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.”
Details surrounding the match and its squads are set to be revealed closer to the game. The game will be broadcasted across both Channel 7 and Fox Footy platforms.
