The Australian Turf Club and the AFL will partner up to build a field in the middle of Royal Randwick racecourse, as first reported by Fairfax Media.

This comes as an attempt by the ATC to get more use out of its central space, which is primarily used as car parking for racegoers.

The field, expected to be the size of the MCG, will be used mainly by the Sydney Swans as a base for training.

The light rail project across Sydney has hampered the Swans' training base at Tramway Oval, reducing a significant portion of the western side of the ground.

With Allianz Stadium set to be demolished later this year and rebulit, the Swans will not be able to rely on the SCG as a place to train, with the ground to also be utilised by the Roosters, Sydney FC and the Waratahs for home games in 2019.

The field is expected to have no impact on racing events at Royal Randwick, which hosts the richest race on turf in the world, the $13 million The Everest, which is to be run in October.
