A very powerful trailer for a documentary looking into the highly-controversial end of the career of Adam Goodes has just been released. The full-length film will be released on the opening night of the Melbourne International Film Festival.
The story, written by award-winning journalist Stan Grant, uses Goodes' story as a prism to detail a deeper story of racism and identity in Australia. It's the second film to feature Goodes in it with the first being The Final Quarter, tackling a similar issue.
"This is the story of Adam Goodes and a moment when Australia faced the worst in itself. But it is more than that — it is the story of a country and its history. A story of pain but, above all, hope,” Grant said in a press release.
The trailer starts at the end of Goodes' career in which he received a lot of backlash for speaking out publicly on the topic of racism. It was particularly poignant after he pointed to a young Collingwood fan in the crowd after hearing a racial slur.
“Suddenly it wasn’t just Adam Goodes the footballer. He was Adam Goodes the angry aboriginal,” Grant is said during the documentary.
There are many appearances from people who played a role in the 2014 Australian of the Year's career including Michael O’Loughlin, Brett Goodes, Natalie Goodes, Tracey Holmes, Nova Peris, Nicky Winmar, Linda Burney, Paul Roos, John Longmire, Nathan Buckley, Eddie McGuire, Andrew Bolt and Gilbert McAdam.
“Our hope is that The Australian Dream will help to reconcile the history of our country and show there is a path forward for future generations," Goodes said in a press release.
