Port Adelaide have "resolved" a matter relating to forward Willie Rioli and Western Bulldogs opponent Bailey Dale that involved Rioli sending a hostile message to a teammate of Dale's following Saturday's match between the two sides.

Rioli and Dale were involved in an on-field incident that saw the former charged with striking, with Rioli able to pay a $1000 penalty for the hit.

It has since been revealed that Rioli sent a message to a Dogs player that has since alarmed both clubs and led to the AFL stepping in, with the matter being investigated.

Rioli has since apologised to Dale, with the AFL deciding to take no action on the matter.

"Port Adelaide is aware of a private message sent by Willie Rioli to a Western Bulldogs player following Saturday afternoon's game between the two clubs," a Port Adelaide statement read.

"The matter has now been resolved privately after Willie contacted Bailey Dale from the Bulldogs.

"Port Adelaide considers the matter resolved and will not be making further comment."

The AFL commented on the matter, sending a reminder to its clubs that "any communications remain respectful".

"The AFL has today spoken to both Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs and while confirming it will take no further action to that undertaken by the clubs and players, it has reminded both clubs to ensure any communications remain respectful," a league statement read.

The Bulldogs have not commented on the matter.
