The AFL has released a statement on the drugs investigation engulfing the GWS Giants.

Reports emerged on Monday night that Whitfield, along with former GWS football manager Graeme Allan and former welfare manager Craig Lambert, had been investigated by the AFL for deliberately avoiding drug testers in May last year.

See the AFL's full statement below:

"The AFL wishes to advise the League's Integrity Department has been conducting a detailed investigation into a matter involving a current listed player of the GWS Giants Football Club, and two members of staff, who have since left the club but remain employed within the industry.

The AFL was notified by the GWS Giants of an allegation by a member of the public.

The AFL will now forward its completed brief to the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Agency (ASADA).

The AFL has no further comment to make at this time while the investigation and determination process is ongoing."
