Peter Venables, the father of ex-Eagle Daniel, has revealed the family has turned down an initial payout offer from the AFL players union after the midfielder was forced to retire from the game due to severe concussion issues.

The Venables family were expecting a compensation amount of around $800,000 but did not receive anything close to that figure, hence knocking back the offer.

"[The AFL Players Association] have offered us a payout but we haven't accepted it," Venables was quoted by The Herald Sun.

"It's not enough and they also want to tax it.

"I am paying for Daniel to live. My wife and I are looking after him.

"We are not letting go of this, this is wrong. We ain't going anywhere. The wall is coming down."

Daniel Venables, who won a premiership with West Coast in 2018 in just his 15th game, suffered seven brain bleeds in a game against Melbourne in Round 9, 2019.

The 23-year-old's family are planning a request of several millions of dollars in compensation that would be paid by both the AFL and West Coast.

Venables' father has lost patience with the league, claiming "the AFL is like a rabbit in the headlights with [concussion]."

"I get asked the question a lot about how I feel and I can't articulate it," Mr. Venables said.

"We have been very respectful as a family and had meetings with Gill McLachlan and (AFL legal expert) Stephen Meade and Peter Gordon and we have tried very hard to be respectful.

"As an old footballer, you don't poke the bear. But they are cornered, they are snookered and Daniel will break this open for everyone (who is battling concussion)."

The Venables family has an opportunity to sue the AFL over the treatment of Daniel but would prefer a more reasonable offer ahead of any litigiousness.
