Some of the game's best players will need to be extra careful over the remainder of the season, with a number of finals-bound stars just one fine away from an automatic suspension.

Richmond duo Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin are both just one incident away from a one-match ban, with Sydney pair Zak Jones and Lance Franklin also on two strikes.

If a player is fined three times in the same season, the third offence is a $2500 fine and has a one-match ban attached to it, with an early guilty plea removing the financial sanction.

The rule does not reset after the home-and-away season, meaning if a player on the below list picks up a fine during the September action, they will miss the following week.

Hawthorn star Luke Hodge and Western Bulldogs premiership captain Easton Wood have both received three fines, and missed matches this season due to the system.

Essendon star forward Joe Daniher is also one fine away from a suspension, with important members of the Crows, Power, Demons and Saints also toeing a fine line.
