Former St Kilda and Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has called for Collingwood to target a star forward as their missing piece of the premiership puzzle.

Nathan Buckley's men have just fallen short of the ultimate prize over the last two seasons, losing both the grand final and preliminary final by under a kick.

He questioned Mason Cox's ability to consistently perform and pointed at out-of-contract duo Joe Daniher and Josh Kennedy to potentially fill the void.

Speaking on Channel Nine's Footy Classified, Lyon urged the Pies to chase the pair in their pursuit of a 16th premiership.

“If we go back to the (2018) Grand Final, (Josh) Kennedy kept West Coast in the game, (Jack) Darling’s second half was superb,” Lyon told Footy Classified.

“Why did they (Collingwood) get there? Because Mason Cox stood up in a prelim and played through the roof.

“But as the great Tony Jewell (premiership coach at Richmond) said, ‘he’s an if’. If Cox turns up today … you need someone that you can bank.

“You can bank on Jeremy Cameron, you can bank on (Jack) Riewoldt, you can bank on (Tom) Lynch. In my view, they need that power forward.

“If I’m them with their (premiership) window open, go after (Joe) Daniher and Cameron because they could be the difference between another cup coming through the door.”
