Christian Petracca is coming off arguably the best game of his career against Adelaide in the Marsh Community Series, which came off the back of the pre-season of his life by all reports.

And now, the 24-year old is set to re-sign with Melbourne, according to The Age.

Petracca had 38 disposals and kicked three goals in a performance coach Simon Goodwin labelled his best ever.

"I certainly haven't seen him play a better game," the Demons mentor said.

Petracca has come back leaner and fitter than ever in readiness for what shapes s a defining 2020 for both himself and Melbourne.

Demon fans have long awaited the arrival of the star they believed to have drafted in 2014, being teased with glimpses for too long.

Petracca played in a midfield role on the weekend and managed to surpass his previous career-best of 29 disposals with ease. More performances like that will see his market value rise ahead of his new deal being inked.

Fox Footy commentator and Brownlow Medalist Gerard Healy compared Petracca to dual Norm Smith Medlaist Dustin Martin.

"I think we've got the blueprint. Isn't he Dustin Martin-esque?" Healy said.

"He's got that capacity, he can go into the middle. I mean Dusty is in a stratosphere of his own, and I understand that, but this guy has got that unique capacity to do the damage at both.

Petracca's contract expires at the end of this season.
