Willie Rioli and Rory Sloane are free to play their respective Round 2 matches after the tribunal overturned their one week bans on Tuesday night.

Rioli, who was facing a charge of rough conduct after an incident with Gold Coast's Matt Rowell, was found not guilty after the West Coast legal team argued that Rioli was going for a mark.

The tribunal deliberated for more than half an hour, but sided with Rioli.

The 26-year-old was playing in his first game after serving a two-year ban due to doping violations. He last took the field in an AFL match during the 2019 elimination final.

Tribunal chairman Jeff Gleeson QC referred to the decision by the tribunal as "not easy", but eventually found that Rioli's intention was to contest the ball.

"Incidents such as this, where the question revolves whether and how the player is contesting the ball, are not easy," Gleeson said.

"This tribunal will be astute to uphold any charge where a player was initially intending to contest the ball, but changed that intention and in doing so, breached his duty of care.

"That is not this case."

Meanwhile Sloane, who was facing charges relating to making contact to the eye region of Fremantle's Blake Acres, successfully argued against his suspension, citing his own history of eye injuries.

"I'm very aware of what even just a little scratch in the eye can do, even just a poke," Sloane said.

"There's no way I'd go after anyone's eye because I'm very aware of the damage it can cause.

"I was super close to being finished in football and close to losing my eyesight so there's no way I'd go near anyone's eye."

The tribunal agreed, downgrading Sloane's charge from intentional to careless. The 32-year-old is now free to face Collingwood on Saturday afternoon.

"He was clear, forthright and adamant that he did not intend to contact the eye region," Gleeson said.

"Having listened carefully to his evidence, we believe him."

Brisbane's Mitch Robinson wasn't so lucky at his hearing, failing to overturn his one-week ban for forceful front-on contact against Port's Xavier Duursma.
