Melbourne midfielder Clayton Oliver believes teammate Christian Petracca is on his way to becoming one of the top players in the league.

Oliver, who's had a brilliant season himself, believes Petracca's performance against Collingwood on Queen's Birthday showed the potential of the young star.

The 21-year-old lit up the MCG last Monday with 18 disposals and three goals, which prompted Oliver to label him as a player who could become a star of the league, if he wasn't one already.

“He’s unbelievable,” Oliver told foxfooty.com.au.

“He’s going to be one of the best players in the comp, if not now, then soon.”

“He got us going, kicked a few goals, got a few intercepts,” Oliver said about his game against Collingwood.

“When he does those little things that no one else can do … like when he got that intercept and got it off to Jeff (Garlett) who kicked a goal … I don’t know how he does it. It’s crazy.

“All of us boys get up and about after it.”

Petracca was selected with the second pick in the 2014 national draft, and has played 28 games after making his debut in round 6, 2016.

The explosive midfielder missed the entire 2015 season after rupturing his ACL in February that year.

After an impressive first season Petracca has stepped his game up against this year, and is averaging 17.9 disposals, 1.45 goals and 4.3 inside 50s over his 11 games.
