North Melbourne legend Wayne Carey says there is no doubt in his mind the Match Review Panel have double standards when it comes to handing down sanctions to the game's biggest stars.

Speaking on 7Mate's Talking Footy on Monday night, Carey referenced Dustin Martin and the two separate incidents that saw him pick up two fines and owe a total of $2500 after clashing with Lions duo Nick Robertson and Lewis Taylor.

The Richmond midfielder is one of the favourites for the Brownlow Medal alongside Geelong's Patrick Dangerfield, with the pair in the top two of almost every major vote count across the country.

Martin is now one fine away from being handed a one-match ban, which would see him ruled out of the running for the medal.

“I tell you what the MRP don’t want — they don’t want Dustin Martin or (Patrick) Dangerfield or any of the other Brownlow favourites to miss a game for an incident like that. If you’re telling me otherwise, you’re kidding yourself,” Carey told Talking Footy.

“I can tell you first-hand, even before the MRP was the MRP, I’m talking about tribunal days — it has always been lenient towards the better the players in the competition and those who are favourites for the Brownlow Medal.”
