League CEO Gillon McLachlan has confirmed two Victorian teams have looked at playing an AFL match in India at some stage.

While it is unknown if it is an idea that will gain legs in the near future or some time down the line, McLachan said it is definitely a frontier the AFL intends to explore.

"Over the journey, Richmond and Essendon have had discussions about India," McLachlan said on 3AW radio, when quizzed about rumours suggesting the Bombers may look to play a game in India.

"I haven't heard them for a little while, but if that's coming out, it wouldn't surpirse me.

"I think India and China stand alone as markets where there are opportunities, you know commercial and also talking to Indian and Chinese Australians."

In February this year, former Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy, along with several Bombers' officials, travelled to India to promote the game and tap into the Indian market and watch the Indian AFL Championships.

In round eight this year, Port Adelaide and the Gold Coast Suns played the first ever game for premiership points in China, as the two sides clashed in Shanghai. The Power took out the match, 16.4 (110) to 4.4 (38).

The Saints also hosted three games in New Zealand between 2013 and 2015.
