Essendon's Irish defender, Cono McKenna, has committed his long term future to the club, signing a four-year contract extension.

McKenna, who made his debut in 2015, playing two games, cemented his place in the Bombers' line-up this year, starring with his pace off half-back, playing 19 matches and averaging 17 disposals.

The 21-year-old said the new deal, which will see him remain at the club until 2021, was an easy decision.

โ€œEssendon has made my transition into football an easy and enjoyable one,โ€ McKenna said.

โ€œWe have a great group of players, and the strong bonds Iโ€™ve made with my teammates have helped me develop my game and drive me to want to achieve success.

โ€œIโ€™ve enjoyed every moment with the club and am happy I will continue to represent the club for another four years.

โ€œI believe in our vision, we have an exciting future and over the next four years I hope we can achieve the success we are working towards.โ€

Coach John Worsfold said McKenna has become a key member of the side.

โ€œWe are very pleased Conor has re-signed with the club,โ€ Worsfold said.

โ€œHis efforts week in, week out, has made him a fundamental part of the squad.

"Conor is still learning our game and with continued hard work he will improve rapidly and become an outstanding rebounding defender.

โ€œConor is an incredible fit for what we are building at Essendon.โ€

McKenna was recruited as a Category B Rookie from County Tyrone in Ireland in 2014.
