Greater Western Sydney small forward Devon Smith has nominated Essendon has his preferred club, according to FoxSports.

Essendon has reportedly beaten Collingwood, St Kilda and initial favourites, Carlton for Smith's signature.

Smith officially requested a trade from the Giants last week after 100 goals in 109 games for the club.

He was a member of the club's inaugural team in 2012, after being recruited with pick No.14 in the 2011 National Draft.

The 24-year-old managed 16 games this season, kicking 15 goals, but did not feature in the Giants' finals campaign.

Essendon is also believed to be the front runners for Western Bulldogs forward, Jake Stringer.
