Greater Western Sydney small forward Devon Smith remains unsigned beyond this season and is likely to be playing his football elsewhere in 2018.

The 24-year-old, who played TAC Cup footy at the Geelong Falcons, has been linked with a move to the Cats all season long.

However, it now appears Carlton are the front runners to secure Smith's signature.

Following a host of recently re-signings, including the likes of Lachie Whitfield, Josh Kelly and Jacob Hopper, Smith looks almost certain to be out of the Giants this trade period, particularly given his desire to gain more midfield time, which now looks unlikely.

AFL.com.au reports the Blues are eyeing Smith in a midfield role and have overtaken the Cats in the race for the 24-year-old.

Geelong's pursuit of Gary Ablett and now Jake Stringer, who is set to nominate the Cats as his preferred destination in the coming weeks, means their interest has cooled on the young Giant.

Smith has kicked 100 goals in 109 matches for GWS, but has been overlooked for the club's two finals so far this season.

He was recruited with pick No.14 in the 2011 National Draft. He has averaged 18 disposals and five tackles this year.
