AFL players will be allowed to return to their home states before the shutdown period.

Clubs are moving to ensure they get their players home before the borders close amid the new restrictions from the COVID-19 crisis.

AFL chief Gillon McLachlan announced on Sunday that the league would be on hold until at least May 31, but were determined to finish the 2020 season.

Gold Coast have reportedly already organised flights for their players, including No.1 and 2 draft picks Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson, who are from Victoria.

Other clubs will organise flights for their players on Monday.

Melbourne duo Luke Jackson and Kysaiah Pickett will remain in Western Australia following their round one loss to the Eagles on Sunday.

A number of other players, including Hawthorn's Chad Wingard, have opted to remain interstate to avoid putting their families at risk.

Port Adelaide players and staff will be forced into quarantine for 14 days after returning from their round one trip to the Gold Coast.
