Essendon legend Tim Watson says the AFL should implement extra time for all home and away matches as well as during the grand final.

The AFL yesterday announced its decision to scrap the controversial drawn grand final, in favour of two five minute periods of extra time.

If scores are still tied, then the team that gets the next score wins that match.

“We’re not changing the home and away, why not ? Just about every code around the world play extra time to try and get a result, and if you don’t achieve a result after extra time then it’s a draw,” Watson said on SEN on Wednesday morning.

“I don’t know why we can’t just turn around and play five minutes extra time after a home and away game.

Watson also said the new golden point rule needs a re-think.

“I think what we need to do is we have two extra five minute each way, after that if we don’t get a result then we all know the next score wins but it has to be a goal.” he said.

“I don’t like the premium game of our season being decided by some ugly little ball that goes through the hands of out stretched players and goes over the line and a team is declared the premiers because of that. I think you should have to kick a goal.”

Do you think we should stamp out draws in home and away matches as well?

  1. if they where stupid enough to do extra time during the season extra time scores shouldn’t count towards for, against and % and just play for the 4 pts but I wouldn’t like to see it in the home and away

  2. yes & whist your changing rules etc.might go 11 a side square pitch round ball net behind the goals …….If its not broken why the frk are we changing the rules….get the rules from 1970 and use them.why? cause that was aussie rules.not the crap we watch today.

  3. Keep the draws in home and away matches, it might sneak a team into the 8. Ive always thought we should give 0.5 or 1.0 points to a team that loses by less than say 10 points(double figures)

  4. No
    A draw is a draw.
We only get a couple every year and both teams get 2 points each.

    Leave the game alone !

Phone 9643 1999 and give them your thoughts about changing the gf draw to extra time instead of a replay.

    Leave the replay alone.
Every one knows if it’s draw, there will be a rematch

Bloody disgusted with the afl right now

  5. Been thinking about this and wondering why we don’t go for something totally different for the regular season and go to a penalty shoot out type of contest? 3 shots from 35m out at different angles, and 2 shots from 50m at different angles? It’d be pretty exciting and if it takes off then give it a go in the finals. Best bit would be that the team keep the points in their % calculations on the ladder!

  6. No way for regular season. 2 points each works fine. Good idea for finals but not a fan of golden score though. Could mean 1 clearance from the
centre bounce wins the gf. Also what about the tram kicking into the wind? 5min each way seems fairer.

  7. Leave the bloody game alone, they always want to change something thats not broken. Aussie rules is our game. We do not have to copy other sports, the crowd figures talk for themselves.

  8. Y is the afl trying to change the game so much I love it 4 25 years but the last two years have being shit two many rules changer so get the afl back two way it was

  9. a draw is better than a dodgy bounce that advantages one team so much so that they get the first point. take the 2 points because it’s better than none
