A 25-year-old man has been charged with assault after allegedly punching an umpire after a grand final in an amateur football league in Western Australia's South-West.

The man allegedly punched the umpire in the face as he walked off the ground after the match, in which the Eaton Boomers beat Carey Park by five points.

The league's president Kevin Lynn, said there was security at the game, but he doesn't know how to stop people from engaging in similar acts.

"There was a police presence at the ground and this was just something that's beyond anyone's control... when a spectator jumps the fence and assaults an umpire," he said.

"We [the league] will certainly be talking about it, but I just don't know how we stop these sort of people jumping fences and running on to the ground."
