Richmond and North Melbourne are set to face off at Etihad Stadium on Friday night to start round 23, the last round before the finals.

The floating round 23 fixture, which is in place to help accommodate the recovery of teams playing in the finals, is yet to be finalised, however AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan today announced that the Roos and Tigers will open the round.

The decision is based on the current ladder positions, with McLachlan indicating that the only other option would have been for the Hawthorn-Carlton match to be played on the Friday, which would have disadvantaged the Western Australian sides.

“With the two West Australian teams on top, to have Hawthorn on the Friday night and getting an additional break as the likely team to play those, it’s fairer to have the top four teams as we stand here playing on the Saturday,” McLachlan said on Tuesday.
