Richmond is reportedly set to make a big play for Greater Western Sydney Giant, Devon Smith.

The Tigers tried to sign the 23-year-old a few years ago and will one again be targeting Smith during this year's trade period, according to The Footy Show's Damian Barrett.

His current contract with the Giants does not expire until the end of 2017, but the Tigers are said to keen to pursue Smith regardless of his current contract situation.

GWS will need to free cap up salary cap space for next season, which may work in Richmond's favour.

The Giants' star midfielder has played 83 games since making his debut in 2012. He has averaged 18 disposals, 6.4 contested possessions, 5.1 score involvements and 4.4 tackles per game in his five-year career.
