Essendon great Tim Watson says that there will always be a “stain” on the Essendon Football Club.

“In terms of his playing days, he’s always going to be one of the greatest players for the Essendon Football Club,” Watson said on SEN radio this morning.

“There’ll always be an asterisk besides his name when he is spoken of and that will include his time as a coach and then what happened during that period of time.

“It’s like anything, when something is new, it’s brighter, it’s shiny and it’s in people’s face. Over a period of time that fades. This is a stain on the history of the Essendon Football Club.

“It’s a very visible stain right now. How visible that will be in 20, 30, 40, 50 years, I don’t know. But it will always be there in the history and the reporting of the Essendon Football Club.”

Watson also said that once the review of the football club started, it was inevitable that Hird would lose his job.
