Injuries are set to force Sydney ruckman Mike Pyke into retirement, possibly opening the door for Matthew Leuenberger to find his way to the Swans.

The Age is reporting that Pyke is expected to announce his retirement at the Swans' best and fairest awards night on Friday.

The former Canadian rugby international played 110 games for the Swans, but he has told the club that his knee would not stand up for another season.

The decision makes the acquisition of Brisbane's Matthew Leuenberger all the more important.

Essendon and Sydney are battling it out for the signature of free agent Leuenberger.
