St Kilda is set to make a play for Richmond star Dustin Martin when the 25-year-old comes out of contract at the end of next season.

Martin is set to become a free agent at the end of 2017 and will will likely field offers in excess of one million dollars per season from several rival clubs trying to pry the talented onballer away from Punt Road.

He enjoyed a career best season in 2016, winning his first club best and fairest and receiving his first All-Australian selection.

The Saints are understood to be keen to lure a big name player to the club next year and have the salary cap room available to do so.

Former Saint Justin Koschitzke even suggested last month Fremantle star Nat Fyfe will join St Kilda in 2018. However, the Saints are also eyeing Richmond star Dustin Martin, according to former player agent, Ricky Nixon.

"I think the biggest name who will be talked about all year will be Dustin Martin," Nixon told Zero Hanger.

"I think the kid is a star. I reckon he's got his eyes set on St Kilda and I reckon St Kilda have their eyes set on him.

"He was actually a mad St Kilda supporter, I use to manage him and I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up there."

Martin averaged 31.1 disposals, 12.6 contested possessions, 3.6 tackles, 4.5 marks, 6.1 score involvements and 5.1 inside 50s.
