Banned Essendon player Ben Howlett is being chased by sever rival clubs, according to the Herald Sun.

Multiple clubs have shown interest in the 27-year-old, who is said to be searching for "greater contract security" after only being offered a one-year contract extension by the Bombers.

The Herald Sun reports that Howlett would have signed "on the spot" if he was offered a two-year deal, but is now considering his options.

The Hawks were intially interested in Howlett, but have since turned their attention to Sydney's Tom Mitchell.

Meanwhile, Carlton and Fremantle pursued him in 2014, before he opted to re-sign with the Bombers.

Howlett has played 117 games for Essendon since making his debut in 2010.
