Hawthorn premiership ruckman David Hale has retired after 237 AFL games.

Hale played 129 games with North Melbourne, before crossing to Hawthorn in 2011, where he won three premierships in 108 games with the Hawks.

The 31-year-old battled groin injuries for most of the year and fought off rival ruckman Jonathon Ceglar to claim his third premiership.

Hale was selected with the No. 7 pick in the 2001 National Draft, before being traded to Hawthorn for pick No. 27 (Kieran Harper) and No. 71 (Ben Mabon)
