Footy fans have been calling for it and now they've got it.

A brand new AFL video game is coming to Play Station 4, Xbox One and PC.

The game, called AFL Evolution, will feature the league's top players and is due for release in the first half of 2017.

AFL Evolution will be produced by Wicked Witch Software in conjunction with licensee Tru Blu Entertainment, who produced AFL Live 2 in 2013, the most recent major AFL video game.

"For some time the AFL has identified a need to create a new video game as another entertainment property for footy fans," AFL general manager of commercial operations Darren Birch said.

"AFL Evolution will deliver a unique experience for footy fans, taking them to the heart of the action in a virtual footy world.

"The AFL is dedicated to supporting Tru Blu Entertainment and Wicked Witch Software in creating a game that is fun to play for AFL fans and keen gamers alike."

Fans will have the chance to choose which players should be on the front cover of the game via a poll on the AFL website.

The players available to choose from include Adam Treloar, Patrick Cripps, Marcus Bontempelli, Jesse Hogan, Chad Wingard, Isaac Heeney and Jeremy Cameron.
