Melbourne defender Steven May was a late withdrawal from Sunday's clash against GWS with a larynx issue.

May was set to line-up for the Demons' Round 1 clash, but after copping a knock during Friday's training at Casey Fields, subsequent scans revealed a fracture.

The club has dealt with an injury similar in nature, with captain Max Gawn sidelined for multiple weeks before the Christmas break.

General Manager of AFL Football Performance Alan Richardson said the club would take a cautious approach with May's recovery, as they did Gawn's.

"At this stage, our medical team does not believe the injury is as significant as what Max Gawn sustained earlier in the year," Richardson said.

"We will assess Steven further next week, which will give us a clearer picture of the recovery timeline."

The seven-time All-Australian ruckman was unable to exercise for two weeks with his injured larynx which was followed by an additional month of non-contact training.

More to come.
