Geelong recruit Ryan Abbot has suffered a major setback in his first pre-season at AFL level, fracturing his leg at training on Friday.

Abbot, the Cats' fourth round selection in the 2016 draft, suffered in the injury during a marking contest.

Geelong director of coaching Simon Lloyd said the 25-year-old sustained the fracture to a non weight bearing bone and he is expected to make a quick recovery.

Cats' youngster Cory Gregson has also suffered a setback in his recovery from a foot injury. Gregson is back in a moon boot after he had resumed running two weeks ago.

The 20-year-old missed the majority of 2016 as a result of the injury.
