Legendary sport broadcaster Drew Morphett died late on Friday night, at the age of 69.

The veteran caller only retired last year, and passed away at his family home and was found by his wife.

Morphett began his career in the sports industry at just 18 years of age, when he became a sports trainee reporter for the ABC in 1966.

He has worked with the ABC in both radio and television and covered a number of sports, including VFL/AFL football.

Morphett also went to six Olympic Games' and covered the cycling, hockey and diving on the world's biggest stage.

After hosting The Winnersย on ABC for most of the 1980s, Morphett joined the Seven Network in 1988 and led their calling of the football until 2000, before moving to ABC Radio Grandstand.

In 2014, Morphett was awarded the Order of Australia Medal as part of the Australia Day ceremonies for his work in sports broadcasting.
