Retired Western Bulldogs defender Matthew Boyd has agreed to join Collingwood's coaching ranks, according to Fox Footy's chief AFL journalist, Jake Niall.

The 35-year-old announced his retirement this year and played his final match of AFL football against the Hawks in round 23, and was sounded out by a number of clubs for a coaching position after the season ended.

Nathan Buckley was seen at a cafe meeting with Boyd just two weeks ago, and it seems as though that meeting was enough to convince Boyd to join the Pies as a development coach.

Boyd will now work with the young players in Collingwood's academy, and may even spend time with the inexperienced members of the senior playing group as well.

The former Bulldog will join Robert Harvey and Brenton Sanderson as coaches of the Pies, although they will be without Scott Burns for next season, after he moved to Hawthorn to become an assistant coach.

Over the course of his 15-year career, Boyd played 292 games for the Bulldogs, and averaged 25 disposals, 5.1 marks, 3.2 inside 50s, 3.7 clearances and 3.4 tackles per game.

The defender won a premiership in 2016, and was also named to the All-Australian team three times (2009, 2011, 2016) over his career.
