St Kilda forward Josh Bruce kicked what was described by SEN's Kevin Bartlett as “the worst miss in the history of the AFL” during the Saints' big win over Hawthorn yesterday.

After being handballed the ball on the edge of the goal square with no one in front of him, Bruce took half a dozen steps before kicking the ball off the inside of his boot and belting it into the post from less than five metres out.

Bruce admitted he simply tried to kick the ball too hard and miss-kicked it. However, he also suggested the umpire was in his way when he was kicking the ball.

“I don’t know. I tried to kick it back to Melbourne I think and the goal umpire was kind of in the way there as well,” Bruce said on Channel 9 on Sunday morning.

“I just tried to kick it way too hard and it came off the instep so pretty embarrassing.”
